American Idol, America's Got Talent, and So You Think You Can Dance are current TV shows that let the average person get on TV and showcase their talent. Back in the day, there was a show that did the same thing with an added element of fun and quirkiness. We're talking about "The Gong Show" with host Chuck Barris. Mr. Barris passed away yesterday at his home in Palisades, NY at the age of 87. In addition to hosting "The Gong Show" with its' cast of humorous judges and regular appearances by "Gene, Gene, The Dancing Machine," Barris created daytime TV game show staples "The Newlywed Game" and "The Dating Game." But Barris was best known for the fun he brought to TV each day hosting "The Gong Show." The show's influence lived on in American culture as it became commonplace to"gong" someone whose talent was deemed not up to snuff. "The Gong Show" even gave us a star as singer Cheryl Lynn of "Got To Be Real" fame was a "Gong Show" winner, securing a recording contract shortly after. Thanks Chuck, for some fun afternoons!
